Analysing Expert System Mechanism

No matter which area of business one is engaged in, expert systems can be used to fulfill the need for higher productivity and reliability of decisions. Expert systems are most valuable to organizations that have a high-level of know-how experience and expertise that cannot be easily transferred to other members. They are designed to carry the intelligence and information found in the intellect of experts and provide this knowledge to other members of the organization for problem-solving purposes. An expert system is a set of programs (or a software) that manipulates encoded knowledge to solve problems or uncertainties in a specialized domain that normally requires human expertise. An expert system in essence captures the life-time experience of knowledge domain experts and reasons through this knowledge to solve problems. Today, when there is an increasing need for producing optimal and consistent solutions to problems in organizations, expert systems can make a significant contribution by making expertise available to the decision makers and technicians who need reliable answers quickly. This technical paper aims at providing an insight into the underlying technology of an expert system. Deployment of expert systems for financial analysis and air traffic management have been chosen to illustrate the techniques employed by an expert system in problem solving.
