New optical fiber based microresonators: Theory and applications

Postprocessing of an optical fiber by melting and drawing allows one to fabricate different types of miniature optical devices, e.g., microanofibers [1] and high Q-factor microsphere resonators [2]. This paper briefly reviews the optical fiber-based microresonators highlighting the recently demonstrated microbubble resonator [3,4], microcylinder resonator [5,6], and, also, the recently discovered microcone resonator [7]. The theory, fabrication, and applications of these microresonators are discussed.
