After years of training and awareness building at the state and national level, industrialcross-cutting systems (motor-driven, steam, process heating) are recognized opportunities forenergy savings. Management's commitment including key management systems and activitiesare necessary to drive success. Barriers can be found at every step of the process for improvingan energy system, from energy system assessment to implementation of energy efficiencymeasures. Real or perceived risk, and past experience of unfulfilled expectations, can inhibit keymanagement support.This paper discusses these barriers and the positive effect that the newly published ISO50001 Energy management system standard and the ASME American National Standards forconducting system assessments can have on these barriers. . Details are provided onASME EA- 4, the compressed air standard, as an example of a proven road map for assistingindustrial energy managers in overcoming these barriers.
