Computing systems can be found as components of an extraordinary variety of larger systems, currently spanning every possible application domain. From the industrial and business perspective, the pervasive nature of embedded systems is the prime rationale to promote the investigation on better design methodologies and more convenient production processes. On the other hand, from the computer science standpoint, the presence of different kinds of constraints in the design and the development phases makes such tasks particularly challenging and worth being carefully studied. Moreover, the need to operate across the boundaries of harware and software calls for expertise in a wide range of fields, e.g. computer architecture, operating systems, compilers, real-time systems, security, software engineering, programming languages, and simulation.
