This presentation will cover the first application and performance of a sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery installed in a U.S. utility grid application for peak-shaving, plus present other applications underway to demonstrate the advantages of large-scale energy storage (greater than 7 MWh). These applications include using battery energy storage to improve power reliability in the grid, improve the dispatch-ability of renewable energy sources such as wind power and provide ancillary services to utility grid operations. This presentation will address basic performance characteristics of the NaS battery and the necessary power conversion system (PCS) electronics required to provide the direct connection to the utility AC grid.
