Realization of Fuzzy PID controller used in turbine speed control system with FPGA

The normal PID control of the turbine speed can not meet the control demand. Therefore, a method to design PID-like fuzzy controller with FPGA is proposed, and the PID parameters can be adjusted on line through the fuzzy inference system which used in the controller is aided with active rules selection mechanism. The design methods with FPGA of the processes such as treatment of gains, fuzzification, inference engine and defuzzification are described. The unique design methods enable the controller to function as a PD-Fuzzy controller, PI-Fuzzy controller and PID-Fuzzy controller. Through the comparison with the software controller, the similar results in step response and control action obtained, meanwhile the hardware controller has higher speed. The chosen target device is EP3C80 from Altera Company, and the design is able to produce an output at 0.331µs with frequency of 57.4MHz. All these features can meet the requirements of most industrial control system.
