Press fit assemblies involving powdered metal (PM) and solid steel parts, such as sprocket and shaft assemblies, are a common PM application. Predictive models for press fit assemblies of fully dense materials are well studied and widely available, however, the effects of density and porosity are not well understood. This work examines the interaction of an FN-0208 gerotor component fitted with a SAE 1045 steel shaft. Software was developed to capture the force-displacement curve throughout the entire press-in cycle. The affects of gerotor density and interference amount on slip torque, press in and press out forces, and permanent deformation were investigated.
