The helium pycnometer is the most important tool in the powder metal injection molding (MIM) process. The feedstock manufacturer uses it to validate incoming raw materials and their end products while the part manufacturer can use it to verify proper molding of the green part, the achievement of correct primary debinding and the attainment of the desired sintered density. The paper shows how these quality control steps may be used to prevent poorly molded parts from being processed all the way through sintering before being discovered.
