A review of laboratory methods for the evaluation and qualification of corrosion resistant alloys for downhole use with respect to resistance to cracking has been attempted. Actual service conditions (e.g., environmental and component stress state), changes in mechanical properties as a function of downhole conditions, and proper selection (and use) of laboratory evaluation methods are discussed as part of a holistic approach to materials selection for fitness-for-service.
