Development and Study of a Reverse Engineering Integrated System

It is very difficult or even impossible to model complex shapes with standard CAD tools. Aimed to improve enterprises' ability in the rapid development of new products, a kind of integrated system of reverse engineering has been developed, including data acquisition and processing sub-system, model reconstruction sub-system and product manufacturing sub-system. This paper, which takes an automobile valve body as an example, describes the processes of RE, from object digitization, CAD model reconstruction to NC machining. Measurement data are acquired by scanning the physical object on a three-dimensional CMM, and parametric design, the optimization of CAD model is finally realized. The objects are then manufactured by using rapid prototyping, rapid tooling and numerical control machining technique. The experiments prove the validity and feasibility of the system while the precision and efficiency have both met the demand.
