A novel nanosized mesoporous hydrogen-evolving photocatalyst InVO_4 was firstly synthesized by aqueous process in room temperature in basic media. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed that monoclinic and orthorhombic InVO_4 were selectively obtained by changing the ratio of (In/V)-to-template in the starting materials. It was found from the diffuse reflection spectra that the new mesoporous photocatalyst InVO_4 showed obvious absorption in visible light region up to 800nm. The bandgap of the photocatalyst was estimated to be less than 2.0eV. Under UV light irradiation the native photocatalyst was found to evolve H_2 from pure water.
