In this work are applied the concepts of fractal geometry to study static and dynamical behavior of dams. It is known that many of the natural phenomena have fractal characteristic, such as distribution of dynamical properties and seismic excitations. Fractal geometry provides elements that allows automation finite element meshes design and its refinement. This can be accomplished using simple fractal models as that of Sierpinsky. It is of particular interest to observe that it is possible to follow the evolution ofplastified regions and the automatic refinement of the finite element mesk in these zones, which improves the results.
