In Brazilian foundation practice, SPT and CPT tests are generally used in the design of pile and shallow foundations, based on direct empirical correlation between penetration resistance and bearing capacity. Ranzini (1988) proposed the SPT-T test that basically consists in measuring the torque required to break the interaction soil-sampler after its penetration. After this, many Brazilian engineers has been used the SPT-T in the foundation practice. This paper presents the results of traditional empirical methods currently used in Brazil to estimate bearing capacity of piles, as well as the results of some new methods using SPT-T test results. All prediction are compared to results of instrumented load tests in different types of piles installed in six experimental research sites of southeast region of Brazil.
