In this work certain epoxy materials, to be more fully specified below, were examined in a microcalorimeter and, in some cases, also in a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Many epoxy resins significantly degrade at low temperature and the resulting layers of oxidised material serve as crack initiators, impairing the mechanical properties and providing a 'short cut' for oxygen diffusing into the sample. This is of relevance to fire protection, and the focus of this paper is comparison of the low-temperature behaviour of epoxy resins with and without halogen flame inhibitors and with and without clay flame inhibitors.
