In the present study, freezing points (T_f) of the cryopreservation solutions (H_2O - NaCl - propylene glycol (PG) ternary system) are measured by using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Through the experimental data fitting, an empirical equation is derived which characterizes the Tf as a function of the solute concentration and the ratio of PG mass to NaCl mass inside a solution. This study focuses on propylene glycol, in part, because of recent evidence indicating PG is less toxic to human platelets than other cryoprotectants, which are currently used routinely for platelet cryopreservation.
