There is a tendency to construct concrete gravity dams without longitudinal joint, particularly, the roller compacted concrete gravity dams. The thermal stresses and temperature control of this type of dam are studied. It is discovered that the thermal stresses in this type of dam are different from the conventional concrete gravity dams with longitudinal joints on all the following respects: the temperature drop in the dam near the foundation, the temperature variation in the vertical direction, the temperature difference between the surface and the interior of dam, transverse crack on the upstream face of dam and the extracooling of concrete around the orifice in the dam.
