The effect of microstructural parameters such as the particle chemistry and the grain structure has been analysed with respect to banding in sheet products.The effect of alloy chemistry (with focus on Fe and Si),grain refinement practice and casting conditions have been investigate and discussed.The most common defects due to inappropriate combinations of the above parameters are fir-tree structures (Altenpohl zones) and feathery crystals,which both may lead to streaks after rolling and etching/anodising.Also the homogenisation practise may lead to banding in sheet products if carried out in an inappropriate way.
