Currently,the most widely used general flame retardant systems for polymeric materials are combinations of halogenated (Cl or Br) organics with antimony oxide.these mixtures are highly effective in inhigiting combustion of the formulated polymers but suffer from the drawback of generating significant levels of HCl and/or HBr in the smoke when a fire does occur.Growing concern over smode corrosivity and toxicity from halogenated materials has prompted extensive research into development of new flame retardant materials which can be readily formulated into polymers in place of the traditional antimony oxide/halogen mixtures.[1]
