Advanced composites, such as fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), can eliminate many problems associated with the corrosion; however, the quality assurance of the composites both before and during service has been a formidable challenge. Conventional nondestructive evaluation methods are not very effective in ensuring the performance and serviceability of FRP and adhesive joints. A technology that enhances the inspectability of advanced composites is a particle tagging technique. This paper presents a theoretical analysis concerning the development of an active tagging technique with embedded ferromagnetic particles and magnetic excitation. A modeling method is proposed to characterize the dynamic behavior of the particles.
