Increased transactions in emerging electric power systems often lead the network into insecure operating region. Network contingencies, especially, branch overloading and voltage violation lead to security problems. This paper illustrates an approach for determining the most suitable locations for installing thyristor controlled series capacitors to eliminate line overloads under single contingency. Using contingency severity index, the mostly affected branches are ranked. An optimization problem for finding the best locations among the ranked branches to install TCSC, and settings for the installed TCSCs, is formulated and solved. The proposed approach uses the new penalty parameter-less constraint handling scheme based Real coded Genetic Algorithm (RGA). Results are compared with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Illustrations using the IEEE 6-bus, 30-bus and 118 bus test systems aim to exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed method.
