The fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are increasingly used in cross arms with good insulating and mechanical properties. In this paper, the insulating properties of the rectangular tube polyurethane composite cross arms were investigated. Lightning impulse test, wet power frequency flashover and withstand test, power frequency pollution flashover and withstand test are carried out for the composite cross arm. Furthermore, the electrical properties of polyurethane composites were tested, including volume resistivity, surface resistivity, dielectric loss factor and surface hydrophobicity. The results show that under the same conditions, the insulating properties of FRP composite cross arm are much better than that of iron cross arm. The polyurethane composite has high surface resistivity and volume resistivity, and the surface of the material has certain hydrophobicity, which can improve the surface insulating performance of the cross arm. The FRP composite cross arms are especially suitable for the areas with frequent lightning activities, humidity, and heavy pollution. The evaluation results above will be of great significance to the operational reliability of FRP composite cross arms.
