The drum level is one of the essential parameter for stable, economic and safe operation of boiler plant. In this paper, a sliding mode based drum level control is presented. The proposed control is developed for eliminating the reaching phase using integral sliding mode control under model uncertainties. The performance analysis is carried out using step and ramp input to validate steady state characteristics by simulations using MATLAB-Simulink platform. The results are compared with conventional PID control. The optimal reduction in feedwater presents an improved performance over PID control. The reduction in feedwater supplied to boiler drum and chattering in control output are the advantages of the proposed control.
