Conclusions: The meshes evaluated in this study represent a range of non-degradable, short- and long-term degradable biomaterials derived from traditionally and alternatively synthesized polymers, each of which elicited an inflammatory foreign body response when implanted in vivo. Human studies are needed to determine the clinical implications of this type of response, which is quite different from the traditional host response to regenerative acellular dermal matrices.
