Conclusions: Together, the results clearly demonstrate the potential of micro-fabricated devices in long-term survival of xenogenic grafts in immunocompetent animals. If successful, this will open new opportunities to study the biology of cells in a foreign environment, and also lead to novel cell-based therapies for a number of chronic diseases; forming the basis for experiments in non-human primate and eventually clinical trials.
