摘要

Although extensive safety measures are in place to mitigate aviation work related injuries, accidents while working on or near aircraft still occur. Upon examining the Naval Safety Center (NSC) database, it was observed that little to no research has been conducted to evaluate the cost of aviation injuries to the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps. The cost of an aviation work injury is dependent upon many factors, to include rank of the injured person, time lost from work, injured body part, and severity of the injury. Naval Safety Center data revealed that there were 1,367 aviation injuries reported between 2005 and 2014 with injuries ranging from superficial to death. Before calculating the cost of aviation work injuries, reports were evaluated for trends in rank, age, fiscal year, injured body part, and the platform the injury occurred on. It was found that injury reports did not contain the necessary data to accurately calculate reliable aviation injury costs.
