Exploring Hospitalization Characteristics for Heart Disease Patients With Diabetes

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women with around 600,000 people dying every year. One of the leading medical conditions that lead to an individual having a higher risk for heart disease is diabetes. The objective of this research is to analyze the relationships between heart disease and a secondary condition of diabetes with length of stay, total charges, disposition, and admission type. Using the 2006 National Inpatient Sample data, patients that presented with a primary condition of heart disease and a secondary condition of diabetes, that were over the age of 65 were used to analyze the relationships. Statistical intervals were used in order to identify outliers and those outliers were then used to evaluate the relationships.
