Power electronic network devices like the Solid State Current Limiter (SSCL) and the Solid State Transfer Switch (SSTS) can be used in the distribution network to improve its performance. A key role is played by the detection system used to operate these devices. The present paper analyzes and compares the different voltage detection techniques implemented so far in SSTSs. It illustrates the problems encountered when these methods are applied in more general ways to detect any type of fault across a range of neutral grounding methods. An alternative fault detection technique is proposed which addresses these problems. The simulations have been performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC package.
