Replacing classical copper wire windings with windings printed on flexible printed circuits (FPC) offers opportunities to improve the torque density of slotless PM machines. This technology has the potential of redefining the optimal use case of slotless motors and how they compare with slotted ones. It is found the FPC slotless topology offers greater flexibility to adapt its performances to the desired working point by changing the PCB track width or increasing the magnetic flux density, e.g. by changing the magnet configuration to a Halbach array. This paper also offers a first analysis on the performances of FPC slotless motors, showing they can outperform existing slotted motors at various volumes.
