摘要

Huntington Ingalls Industries is currently under contract to develop Interactive Multimedia Instruction (IMI) for what is being termed as the Navy's next generation destroyer, DDG 1000. This first-of-class smart ship includes new technology that automates certain tasking, enabling the ship to be operated using a reduced crew size. But responsibilities have not reduced with automation; rather, they have increased the individual training requirements. Although IMI liberates sailors from a classroom, why limit sailors to a computer? The same multimedia being developed for IMI can be utilized for the development of training aids in the form of "Apps" for smart devices. Smart devices are rapidly becoming the norm for many Service members; as such, training has an opportunity to leverage this technology. This paper discusses the potential for developing mobile applications for smart phones and tablets to support and train Navy crews across all platforms.
