Teams in aerospace are often geographically dispersed, such that communication technology is crucial for successfulcoordination. For optimal networking capabilities and effective resource allocation, a team must acquire an accurateawareness of the current situation. Information sharing, in the form of shared situation awareness between teammembers, has to be established. Often, shared situation awareness is dependent upon the use of advancedtechnological communication devices and shared environments. However, shared situation awareness is restricted indispersed teams, such as Mission flight controllers and in-flight Mission specialists. These individuals must rely onverbal communication and shared displays. In complex aerospace environments, which call for quick decisionmaking, communication failures can have catastrophic outcomes if data exchange is lost for prolonged periods or ifthe situation is not constantly monitored. The objective of this research is to investigate the disruption ofcommunication technology on shared situation awareness in dispersed team environments. In order to examine thisobjective, participants would be randomly assigned to one of two dispersed teams. To provide each participant withdynamic simulation conditions and clear team tasks, teams would complete scenarios in a microworld environment.Each participant would be immersed in situations with advanced communication technology availabilityinterspersed with periodic disruptions. Assessment of shared situation awareness, along with workload,performance, and behavioral analyses would be conducted. The results of this experiment might help to improvesupport for accurate course of actions and strategic goals, and develop procedural support aspects to maintainrelevant shared situation awareness levels in complex aerospace environments.
