To reduce the vehicles collision accidents and improve the efficient usage of all-weatherhighway, a novel Highway Vehicular Collision Warning (HVCW) mechanism based onmulti-information fusion is presented in the paper. In the proposed system architecture,vehicular driving position, speed, lane and status information is extracted by multisensors, which is constituted in Vehicle Warning Messages (VWM). The vehiclesexchange VWMs through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication network fordetermining the collision warning, which is provided for drivers in audio/light signal. Anembedded HVCW system is developed, which employs 802.15.4/Zigbee RF technologyfor V2V communication and monocular machine vision technology for lane detection. Toverify the functionalities and evaluate the performance of the system, a field test wastaken on the highway, in which three vehicles equipped the systems were consisted in avehicle team. The test results show the HVCW system can play an important role inimproving the driving safety in the low visibility of highway.
