Total station trigonometric leveling has been widely used in railway engineering survey because of its high efficiency and flexible implementation.In this paper, the error analysis of three trigonometric leveling methods of single observations, bi-directional observation and intermediate station observation was presented.Analysis includes error sources and the influence of error on the observations.The sources of error include instrument accuracy and error, sighting error, the error caused by curvature of the earth, the error caused by atmospheric refraction, etc.The major impact of errors on the observation includes errors eliminated by different methods and the impact of observation results.It was shown that the observation accuracy of trigonometric leveling method of intermediate station with total station instrument was higher than the other methods of observation station through evaluation results.The observation results of the intermediate station trigonometric leveling by total station instrument in Xi-Ge section of Qinghai-Tibet Railway construction were used,the accuracy of observation results was evaluated, and the observation results and accuracy were compared with level measurement.The results indicated that the trigonometric leveling of intermediate station could achieve higher accuracy, so it was a good method of height measurement in railway and other civil engineering construction and topographic mapping.
