Since its first application in the UK sector of the North Sea in the late 1980's, THPS has established a "best-in-class" status for the control of problematic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and the operational problems associated with their metabolic activity. This paper will review how THPS technology has been developed and enhanced to meet new industry needs, will compare and contrast the various different "THPS generations" currently available on the market, will discuss and describe case studies and best practices for the control of reservoir souring, iron sulfide, schmoo and microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) and will provide insights into new control strategies, applications and efficacy data against challenging new organisms, such as archaea.
