Measurements with the Pille TLD system onboard the International Space Station during Expedition 15 and 16

Astronauts are permanently exposed to galactic and solar cosmic radiation on the International SpaceStation (ISS), which may have far-reaching health effects. Measuring dose, dose rate and lifetime dose of theastronauts is important to protect their health. The Pille thermoluminescent dosimeter system is measuringabsorbed dose on ISS in every 90 minutes, so it provides relatively high time resolution dose rate data. It is alsoused to measure dose on several places on the space station and to measure excess doses of extravehicularactivities.The original Pille system was developed by KFKI AEKI in the late 1970’s and was used by the first Hungariancosmonaut, Bertalan Farkas, in 1980 during his flight aboard the Russian Salyut-6 orbital station. Pille was thefirst and to date the only TLD system designed specifically for use by cosmonauts and astronauts while working inspace. Since the first time it was launched, the Pille system has been onboard every space stations launched.The Pille TL dosimeter system has been continuously used onboard the International Space Station since October2003 under the supervision of the Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP), Moscow as the service dosimetersystem of the Russian Zvezda module.The measurement data from the latest expeditions (Expedition 15 and 16, April 2007 – April 2008) obtained byPille system are presented in this paper. The results will be compared with previous results.
