A Study of Rotary-Wing Crashes to Support New Crashworthiness Criteria

The paper reports on a study of rotary wing mishaps conducted as part of the Full Spectrum Crashworthiness (FSC) program, directed by the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD). The study developed quantitative evidence for updating the crashworthiness design criteria for future rotary wing military aircraft. The study differentiated between crashes which occur directly into terrain and those that impact an obstacle inflight prior to terrain impact. Trends in the frequency and characteristics of these two accident types are reported. Findings with regard to the efficacy of crash-resistant fuel systems, safety equipment frequency of use and pilot control in the terminal phases of flight prior to crashes are presented and support the conclusion that crashworthy design is beneficial. Recommendations are made regarding the development of future crashworthiness technologies.
