It has been widely acknowledged that supply chain integration (SCI) affects the performance of thesupply chain (SC). However there have been few studies that have tried to come up with a unified modelfor characterizing the enablers of external integration in a SC. This paper studies the enablers of externalintegration through the theoretical lens of complex adaptive systems (CAS). Viewing SC systems as CAShelps us better understand as to why supply chains faced with similar situations perform differently. Wedevelop a conceptual model to argue that supply chains that adapt better will end up having betteroutcomes of integration.
