The problems such as large amount of repeated designs and long design cycle in the traditional design process of crane seriously affect the ability of rapid product development. This situation urges the need for study of a new rapid design approach. So combined with modular technology and product configuration technology the concept of parameterized templates is introduced to variant design of products to solve the problems. On the basis of prescribing the principle of parameterized templates, three aspects is elaborated in this paper: the first of which is the implementation method of parameterized product template, the second is design flow of rapid variant design based on parameterized template and the third is the framework of parameterized variant design system. This new design method is applied to the design case of gantry crane, so that it improves the variant design efficiency and reduces the design cost.
