The Central American Probabilistic Risk Assessment (CAPRA) use of remote sensing to extract data for natural disaster risk assessments

Th e Cen tral Am erican Prob abilistic Ris k Assessment (CAPRA) initiative seeks to en hance disaster risk u nderstanding in th e Cen tral Ameri can region . 11 provides a Ge ographic Infor mation Sy stem ( GIS)-based platform of in formation on risk generat ed by adverse natural events. CAPRA applies probabilistic risk analysis techniques to me asure magnitude and like lihood of occurrence of hazards. This information is combined with exposure of assets and vuln erabiliry data, t o produce a comprehensive meas ure of risk. Th e mai n CAPRA product is a compendium of risk maps, ge nerated fr om hazard, exposure and vulner ability data. T hese maps provide disaste r r isk spe cialists and polic y-makers with the necessary information to manage future disaster risk. One of the central challenges of the CAPRA initiative is the availability and collection of information about assets exposed. This pape r pr esents var ious remote se nsing techniques use d to build the asse t databas e ne eded to calculate r isk. CAPRA aims to beatth e forefront of technological developments in data collection, in order to provide accurate risk assessments.
