During war-time operations, military commanders must maintain the readiness and sustainability of each mission. In 2003, they had to also consider the additional responsibility of accommodating leave (I.e., time-off) for eachsoldier under his/her command. Given the combinatorial nature of this problem, manual approaches used bycommanders fail to find acceptable solutions of assigning soldiers both to missions and leave within an acceptableamount of time. In this paper, the challenges in scheduling soldiers in a military company during war-timeoperations will be identified and a method will be proposed to find high-quality solutions in a short period of time.
