Technical System Variance Analysis of Course ManagementSystems

This study analyzed differences between two Web-based course management tools, based on success factors andsystem interactions. The study identified key variances of the systems, their impact on the systems, determinedwhether the resulting variances were due to software errors or staff implementation oversights, collected feedbackfor suggested changes and system redesign. The results show myCourses offers additional functionality and optionsover WebCT, but yields more system variances. Student opinion reveals that greater faculty insight is needed tobetter satisfy course requirements. Further findings including CMS design recommendations that could havesignificant implications for universities, educators and developers of CMSs.
