Social networks are online communities comprised of organizations or individuals who are connected byshared identities or interests. These networks, used for both personal and professional purposes, areconstructed to stimulate interaction among their members. In this paper, we explore opportunities as well aschallenges of social networks for the purpose of collaborative engineering in a product lifecyclemanagement (PLM) environment. Social networks enable engineers to continuously seek to enhanceknowledge, promote innovation, and encourage effective communication. Collaborative engineering withinPLM systems is likely to be greatly impacted by social networks, even though significant technicalchallenges need to be resolved.
