A Low Cost Laser Illuminated Arc Welding Monitoring System

Camera Sensor Systems are being increasingly used to improve control of the welding operation for both mechanised (user operated) and automated welding processes. When welding using processes such as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Metal Inert Gas MIG monitoring or control of the welding operation relies on obtaining a clear visual image of the weld pool area. For example, the weld pool tracking relies on monitoring the position of the weld pool relative to the joint line and control of the depth of weld pool penetration requires feedback control of the weld pool width (1).
