The rigid polyurethane and polyiso foam market continues to grow with increasing concerns over energy savings, code requirements and sustainability – environmental and human health. In January 2008, ASHRAE (The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) increased the minimum required roof and wall insulation levels by 33%. Flame retardants play an important role in meeting code requirements and must also be sustainable. Supresta / ICL-IP has developed and continues to develop flame retardant products to meet the ongoing challenges of today’s market where superior performance in fire tests including low smoke development are required. Halogenated and halogen free products have been developed for various applications including polyisocyanuarate and polyurethane rigid foams. Product sustainability was a major criterion for development. A series of evaluations was conducted using lab bench scale testing to show improvements in flame retardant properties. Reactive and non-reactive products were also evaluated to identify benefits of each. The results of these developmental product evaluations will be presented.
