Quality in Design: Creating Identity in Street Furniture Design

Street furniture, objects and facilities located in urban public spaces to provide various public services and functions, is receiving increasing emphasis in today's urban landscapes, with tight requirements as to its quality. Regarding principles of street furniture design, many have argued that, in addition to functional considerations, identity should be a significant factor when designing quality street furniture for modern urban environments and urban life. This paper addresses the relationship between street furniture and its location's identity. It further suggests that street furniture should be designed to reflect the characteristics of a place, such as its history, culture, and tradition; urban life and behavior; new development; and geographic environment and climate.
