SITE INVESTIGATION ON THE MSW IN SHANGHAI COMMERCIAL CENTER AND ITS USE FOR THE PREDICTION OF THE WASTES TO BE GENERATED IN SHANGHAI EXPO 2010 MSW

Shanghai EXPO 2010 will be held in 2010, and the management of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) generated in this EXPO is a challenge. In this work, the recycling and separation of MSW to be generated in the EXPO 2010 was studied, using the MSW collected from Nanjing Road, the commodity and business center in Shanghai. It was found that the percentages of food wastes, plastic and paper in the Nanjing Road MSW was 50 %, 45%, respectively, comparing with 20% to 30% of plastic and paper in the MSW in Shanghai in general. Hence, it seems that the solid wastes in the Nanjing Road should have a higher value than the general wastes, indicating that the MSW in the future EXPO 2010 should be sorted and recycled.
