摘要

This paper describes a new method of surface modification by ordinary Electrical Discharge Machining(EDM) tool. On the basis of ordinary EDM method, a hard ceramic layer can be deposited on the workpiecesurface quickly with special semi-sintered electrode in the process of EDM, so the surface property of theworkpiece is improved. First, the principle of this surface modification method is shown. Secondly, through aseries of measurements including of the measurement of layer thic kness, the test of hardness and the analysis ofX-ray diffraction, the characteristics of the layer are discussed in detail. At last, its application to the cutting toolsis also discussed. The tests and analysis show this new surface modification technology by EDM is a verypotential method.
