Depending on the experimental conditions used for the preparation of Co/SiO_2 materials, the cobalt complexes interact with the oxide surface in different ways, so as to lead to: (i) grafted isolated Co species when silica acts as a bidentate ligand and (ii) cobalt phyllosilicates when silica acts as a reactant.
