Many investigators in many countries have considered the use of scrap automotive tires for porduction of activated carbons (e.g., 1-4). The process is attractive both from the perspective of eliminating a highly undesirable waste stream as well as producing a valuable product. Unfortunatley, the tire pyrolysis have rather low surface areas and must therefore be activated to be of commercial interest. This study has focused on the process of activation of these carbons in three different oxidizing gases.
