Information on measurement uncertainty is an essential for any measurement procedure. If a large field of application (very different objects to be measured and widely varying external influences) is desired these uncertainties will cover a wide spread, in general. In order to limit these uncertainties apart of reducing the field of application the establishment of a flexible measurement procedure is required. This means e.g. for determining the sound power of technical sound sources (machines, equipment) being installed in very different in situ environments the measurements must be adjusted to the sound field situations. For such a non-rigid procedure adjustments can be carried out, e.g. by increasing the number of measurement positions, higher instrumentation quality, longer integration times. But on the other hand a numerical characteriz ation of the current sound field situation is necessary in order to correlate the effort of the measurement procedure with a well defined sound field situation.
