Safety integrity levels (SILs) are now an integral part of safety engineering and appear in almost all modern safety standards. This paepr begins with various intuitive interpretations of what SILs mean and hwo they are calculated. it then considers the engineering basis behind the setting of SILs, paying particular attention to the requirements of the standards IEC 61508, DO-178B, Def Stan 00-56 and Mil-Std 882C.
